09 Apr 10 Kenneth Copeland Ministry: Growth In Spite Of Controversies

Kenneth Copeland Ministry (KCM) is perhaps one of the biggest ministries today, with work spanning from the United States, Australia, Africa, Europe, Canada, and Asia Pacific. Established in 1967, it continues to proclaim the message “Jesus Is Lord” through various ministries all over the world, focusing on faith, love, healing, prosperity, and restoration.

Founder Kenneth Copeland did not originally start as a minister. In fact, he was a budding recording artist. His record Pledge of Love spent several weeks on the charts and peaked at Billboard #12. He also appeared in several music magazines.

However, when his wife Gloria found the Bible given to Kenneth by his mother, she started to read it and decided to offer her life to God. Kenneth then followed suit by giving up his music career and moving to Oklahoma to pursue studies at Oral Roberts University in 1967. As part of the flight crew for Oral Robert’s tent meetings and crusades, he learned so much and became so inspired to start his own ministry for the Lord. His first venture was with the TV program “Believers of Voice of Victory” which first aired on television in 1979.

Various Ministries. Focused on faith, the ministry reaches out to spread God’s word founded on love, healing, prosperity, and restoration. Under various ministry arms, it has set out to spread the gospel across the world. Its prayer ministry prays for over 11,000 people every week. They even make calls to about 2,000 partners to respond to prayer requests. They even have a prayer line available 24 hours a day. The prison ministry restores lives by giving Bible studies and praying for about 52,000 prisoners in Texas and Louisiana. During disasters, the ministry, through its KCM Relief Fund donates food, clothing, and financial assistance to calamity victims. Other ministries include Military Ministry, which provides a support group to troops and their families through prayer and counseling, Outreach Ministries in orphanages and rehabilitation centers all over the world, and its flagship television ministry “Believers of Voice of Victory”.

Criticisms and Controversies. The ministry however is not without trials. They faced criticisms on their “World Faith Movement” particularly on Copeland’s claim regarding faith healing. They were also criticized for teaching that believers could get a hundredfold return on their giving as they quoted several quoted scripture verses to convince people to donate. The Copelands were also accused of leaving their Affordable Homes Limited in thousands of dollars in debt. However, as they were limited partners, they were not obliged to explain or pay the debt.

In 2007 the couple also allegedly used their $20 million Cessna Citation X jet for personal trips and gave Rolls Royces to their staff. They In 2007 the couple also allegedly used their $20 million Cessna Citation X jet for personal trips and gave Rolls Royces to their staff. KCM was asked by US Senator Chuck Grassley to divulge financial information on their ministry. The Copelands then released “Financial report from Kenneth Copeland Ministry,” done by an independent audit firm, and launched a website to help explain their side. The Kenneth Copeland Airport in Texas, which was established through this ministry, continues to serve as gateway for KCM’s mission trips.

Despite these controversies, KCM continues to expand. Its ministries have sprung in various parts of the globe. Its partners extend all over the world. Kenneth and Gloria’s children Kelly and John have also taken part as writer for their publication and CEO of KCM respectively. Together with the Eagle Mountain International Church, they pursue the legacy and heritage in proclaiming that “Jesus is Lord.

19 Nov 09 God Will Take Care of You

I recently celebrated a milestone birthday and that led my to do some reflecting on my life. As I look back over the years the one thing that I have seen over and over again is that God is faithful. Regardless of the situation or how things appeared at the time, God has always been faithful to me and my family. It started when I was a child and I realized that I need to accept Jesus as my Savior.

Two years later I felt God speaking to my heart and saying, “Ann, I want you to be a missionary.” I did not know what that was really, except that a missionary was someone who told others about Jesus. And at the age of ten I gave my life to Jesus.

Like most teenagers, I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to be or what I wanted to do when I grew up. However, one thing that I did always know was that God was watching out for me and that he had a plan for my life.

At college I met a great guy and we fell in love. We decided to serve in the mission field after we were married. That was an exciting time in our lives, going off to do something totally new and uncertain. Despite the excitement that we had, things in Africa were often quite challenging.

There were hurts and difficulties. There was a lot of tension politically. God always met every need in every place in ways that seemed impossible. When there was no flour to be had to bake bread, for we had to bake from scratch, He supplied that. When it looked like there would be no salt, somehow it was there when we needed it. When baby clothes were needed for our first child, God sent that too.

From there it was back to the States, and then on to France for missionary service, where our son was born. God was faithful over and over and over again with strength, with energy, and with finances. Year after year, God has been faithful.

God brought us back to the States, and we have been in Hanover over fifteen years. And in those fifteen years, God has been just as faithful on this side of the ocean as He was on the other side. He is good, my friend. He meets every need.

God’s protection and provision remind me of these words to a well-known song, “Great is Thy faithfulness, O God, my Father. There is no shadow of turning with Thee. Thou changest not, Thy compassions they fail not. Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord unto me.” Looking back on my years and how He has always been there I can confidently say “Great is Thy faithfulness!

Dr. Ann Shorb is a professional Christian counselor in Hanover, Pennsylvania. She provides counseling for a wide variety of issues including depression, marital issues, family issues, stress, ADHD, anxiety, grief and much more.

27 Jun 09 Take Time to Review and Count Your Blessings

by Dr. Ann Shorb

Remember when you were young and the school teacher said “We will be having a test in a few days?” That meant that it was time to start reviewing the things that you had learned in class. Hopefully, you had been studying all along.

But when he said it was time for the exam, it was time to stop and take a good, thorough review of everything that you had gone over. You had to try to remember everything, put it in its proper place, and know how to use it for your benefit.

You know the Bible is full of reviews, and sometimes I think God wants us to just stop and review. If we look back in the Old Testament, we find in Exodus 15 that Moses did a great job of reviewing. Just after God had brought Israel safely through the Red Sea and had destroyed their enemies behind them.

In the first verse of Exodus chapter 15 we read that Moses and the people of Israel sang a song out to God. The song that they sang is basically a review of all the wonderful things that God had done for the people of Israel. He had protected them and blessed them in many ways. He saved them from their enemies, destroyed those enemies, and protected them in the wilderness.

Moses was not the only one who did a lot of reviewing. In the book of Psalms there are many passages that just retrace Israel’s history and thank God for His blessings. I think particularly of Psalm 18, where David wrote, “I will love You, O Lord, my strength.” He goes on to talk about why he loves God: God is his strength, his rock, his fortress, his deliverer.

We can also look in the New Testament. In Hebrews chapter eleven there is a review not only of what God has done but of the faith of many people found in the Old Testament. It talks about faith as the substance of things hoped for, and the evidence of things not seen. The chapter continues then to speak of the faith of Abel, Enoch, Noah and Abraham.

Reviews of what God has done can be a great way to appreciate the things He has done and to praise Him. Take time in your own life to look back and reflect how God has taken care of you and led you to where you are. Count the blessings in your life that exist because of what God has done for you.
