We can’t stress enough how important a game like baseball can be to a child’s life. There are so many life lessons that come from a team sport, we don’t even know where to begin. Then again, it really doesn’t matter where we start because all of them will help your children grow.
One of the important concepts which baseball can teach your child is teamwork. Being part of a team means that your child both relies and is relied upon by the rest of their team. This imparts a sense of responsibility to others and an ethic which will stick with them into adulthood.
While trust is important, your child will soon realize that winning isn’t everything. There isn’t anyone who can sit back and say they’ve never lost at something. However, you won’t find anyone ever saying that a loss didn’t teach them something about real life.
Your child will also learn that skills are acquired through practice and that they will need to put in some hard work in order to meet their goals. It may take a little while to sink in if your child is very young, but this is a principle which they will come to realize is applicable in every aspect of their lives.
Children can learn the valuable life lesson from baseball that none of us knows everything. They have to listen to their coach and others. They gain the knowledge that other people may have something valuable to teach them and that by listening, they often have more to gain than by talking.
As parents we can also learn from our children as they play baseball. Think about what your child does when their team loses. Are they upset? They may be a little disappointed, but they know that there will be other games and that you can’t win them all. They’re probably more interested in getting some ice cream or getting back to playing after the game. We could learn a little from them about not letting the little things get to us.
While all of these are great life lessons that come from baseball, the most important one is to have fun. If your kids have to be dragged to the ballpark for every practice or game, maybe this isn’t something that suits them. Then again, a few months of organized ball could help structure their goals in other facets of life as time goes on.
Baseball teaches your kids a lot more than just how to hit the ball and round third base. They learn teamwork and other valuable life skills and from watching your children you may learn some important lessons yourself. Remember that this is also about fun, so don’t pressure your children. They’ll still have fun and learn a lot on the diamond, even if they never become a star of the team.
